Make summer heat more bearable for your animalsMost of our pets cannot sweat and also wear a warming coat.
They are much more likely to be at risk of life-threatening heat stroke than humans. A few tricks can make the summer heat more bearable for our animal companions. The Susy Utzinger Foundation for Animal Welfare has compiled the most important tips for pet owners.
For dogs: No strenuous bike rides in the heat and no long walks at lunchtime. If possible, move along the water and choose the cool forest for the walk in the early morning and evening hours. Avoid walking on asphalt to protect your dog's paws: Even at an air temperature of 25°C, the ground can heat up to 52°C and seriously injure paws. For unavoidable car trips with the dog, it is a good idea to have the windows in the car darkened (by a professional or yourself with tinted adhesive film).
But never let the dog wait in the car: The car heats up already from 15 degrees within a few minutes so strongly and that it becomes the death trap for the quadruped. It is equally important to provide the dog always enough fresh water.
For cats: Many cats do not think much of bathing, but some cooling can be achieved by wetting the cat's ears on the outside. Stroking with moistened hands is just as pleasant and cooling for the cat. Cats can also get sunburned when exposed to direct sunlight, white cats are particularly susceptible to this. Therefore, it is recommended to cream the ears and the nose area of particularly sensitive animals with an unscented sunblock (for babies). Wet food spoils quickly: Giving smaller portions early in the morning or evening is recommended, as well as placing additional water bowls.
For rabbits, guinea pigs and co.: Moistening the outside of the ears also provides a pleasant cooling for rodents. It is also important to provide enough fresh air and shade in the run. Never place the small animal home directly on the balcony floor, as this heats up considerably. To avoid dehydration several drinking possibilities should be offered.
For exotic birds: The bird cage should not be exposed to the blazing sun: a shaded area is vital. Despite the heat, birds should not be in drafts, as there is a danger of catching a cold. For a pleasant refreshment provide a bath, alternatively many also like a shower from the spray bottle.
