Today we are marking Ukraine’s national flag day!

On this day in 1991, the national flag of Ukraine was brought into the plenary hall of the Ukrainian Parliament, Verkhovna Rada, as a symbol of state sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

Amid the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the blue and yellow flag became the epitome of hope and freedom, courage and strength, resilience and determination of the people of Ukraine. It flies over the battlefields as a reminder that freedom is not for free.

31 years later, the flag of the European Union was brought to the plenary hall of the Parliament to mark another milestone – Ukraine’s EU candidate status. This symbolic move is another proof of our joint values and common goals. We want to live in democracy and prosperity, not in the darkness of totalitarianism.

The EU will stand by Ukraine in the fight against Russia’s aggression: during reconstruction and on your European path.
