The French Tax Service, using AI and satellite images, has found 20,356 illegally built swimming pools in the country.
The system was developed by Capgemini consulting company together with Google, it identifies swimming pools on photos from the air and can check them against land registry databases. At the same time, the authors of the project noted that the error is about 30%.
So far the AI has been run in test mode in nine French departments and as a result about 10 € million fines have been collected. Now the authorities intend to analyze the rest of the country in the same way, predicting to attract about 40€ million more to the state treasury.
