Etymology in Greco-Roman antiquity: literary, linguistic, and philosophical perspectives
14th Celtic Conference in Classics
Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra
Coimbra, Portugal
11–14 July 2023
Conveners: Athanassios Vergados (Newcastle), Ioannis Ziogas (Durham)
With this panel we aspire to bring together scholars of Greek and Latin literature, linguistics, and ancient philosophy in order to study a pervasive phenomenon in ancient literature, the use of etymology and “wordplay”. While ancient etymology has been the object of intense study in recent years by literary scholars or from an Indo-European perspective, an investigation of this cultural phenomenon simultaneously from literary, linguistic, and philosophical perspective so as to reveal its importance as an epistemological instrument is still a desideratum.
Research on etymology often treats language as culturally isolated. By contrast, we aim to highlight the cultural significance of ancient etymologising and thus make an important contribution not only to the philosophical and philological but also to the socio-political background of ancient etymology. The panel will include two types of papers: specific case studies and more theoretical examinations that link literature with philosophy and/or linguistics. Questions to be asked include (but are not limited to):
· What does the use of etymology reveal about authors’ conceptualization of the relation between language and reality and of language’s potential to communicate truth(s)?
· In what ways does etymology enhance one’s argument?
· What kind of understanding of linguistic diachrony/synchrony is reflected in ancient etymology?
· How do ancient scholarly practices influence the etymological thinking of literary authors and how are they in turn influenced by the use of etymology in literature?
· In what ways does etymology reflect wider, even non-linguistic, philosophical considerations?
Please send abstracts of up to 300 words (excluding references) to both organisers via email (athanassios.vergados@ncl.ac.ukand ioannis.ziogas@durham.ac.uk) by the 1st February 2023. Decisions will be communicated to authors by the 15th February.
It is planned that the conference will take place in-person, but provision will be made for on-line participation as well. Please indicate whether you intend to participate in person or on-line when submitting your abstract. Papers will last 20 minutes, with discussion to follow. We especially encourage PhD researchers and early career colleagues to submit an abstract. In line with the conference organizers’ guidelines, we will consider submissions in English, French, and Portuguese, but the language of the event will be English.
